The Juicing Process of a Centrifugal Juicer
This juicer type chops up fruits and vegetables into pulp with a flat cutting blade first. Afterwards, with the naked power of the centrifugal force it separates juice from pulp.
This is done with the very high spinning speed of about 3.000 – 12.000 RPMs or even more. In the end, juice runs through very small holes of a strainer basket into a container at the bottom.
You must remove pulp, which remains in a strainer basket. There are also models of centrifugal juice extractors available, which have an additional delivery area, called the “pulp ejector” element. This feature enables automatic pulp ejection when a pulp bin is full.
You do not have to stop the juicing process to empty a pulp bin and that saves you time.

Due to the high spinning speed there is some air and pulp present in the juice and oxidation happens very quickly. The juices are muddy, they contain some foam, and it is very hard to preserve them without losing a great deal of nutritional values of vegetables and fruits, which you get in a fresh juice.
There are also opinions that a steel blade can cause oxidation, too. Additional bad characteristic seems to be that due to the high spinning this juicer type can overheat when juicing and so many important minerals and vitamins, which are heat sensitive, are lost. With a centrifugal fruit and vegetable juicer you get your fresh healthy natural juice much quicker than with other electric juicers. There are two reasons for that:
Firstly, the juicing process itself is faster than with other electric fruit and vegetable juicers.
Secondly, more or less you can get only a centrifugal “big mouth juicer” with a round, wider feeding chute. Diameter of such “big mouth” is 3” or even more.
“Big mouth” enables you to juice bigger chunks or even the whole fresh produce. Therefore, you need less time for preparation of juicing ingredients, the complete juicing process is therefore shorter. These juicer machines are the real timesavers.
What Can be Juiced with a Centrifugal Juicer
Actually, you can juice everything, but the question is what do you get?
These juicers are more appropriate for juicing stiff vegetables (root vegetables) and firm fruits since a cutting blade can easily rend them.
On the contrary, due to the specific juicing process it is a bad choice for juicing green leafy vegetables, different sprouts, herbs and wheatgrass. Juice yield of such “greens” can be even 50% and more lower compared to the gear type juicers.
You can improve the juicing result either with winding of greens and herbs around firm fruits or vegetables. You can also prepare sandwiches with fruit or vegetable (above and below a juicy fruit or vegetable such as a lemon, and greens and/or herbs in between), or you can prepare sheaves.
Pros of a Centrifugal Juicer
• The juicing process is very fast, much quicker than with other electric juicer types. Especially quickly you can prepare juice with a “big mouth juicer”. That enables you to juice bigger chunks or even whole fruit and veg, what saves your time for chopping.
• It is easy to use, also for the beginners and children or if you maybe want to “juice just for fun”.
• Disassembly and assembly is not too complicated.
• Cleaning, especially of a stainless steel juicer, is quite quick and simple.
• You can get a centrifugal juice machine for a very favorable price. As a rule, price should be better than for other electric juicers types. If you are not on a budget, a centrifugal juice extractor could be the right choice for you, at least for the beginning.
Cons of a Centrifugal Juicer
• It is not very effective at juicing leafy vegetables, wheatgrass, sprouts, herbs …
• The centrifugal technology results oxidation, many important nutrients and enzymes are destroyed.
• Chopping with a high-speed blade does not allow penetration into fresh produce deep enough to extract all health-significant substances into juices.
• The high-speed spinning results also in a significant foam amount.
• Juice yield is not the best; it is much lower than with gear juicer types.
• The high-spin juicing speed can be pretty noisy.
• The best models are quite pricey.
We admit; a centrifugal juicer is not our favorite juicer type. Due to amazing quality of healthy juices they provide we prefer gear type juicers.
